Book Review: Mate: Become The Man Women Want By Tucker Max Geoffrey Miller
But back then it was just that I met him and had sex with him. Voles have sex and then they just want to be around each other all the time, it’s just primal. I think you’re talking about people who have the self-control to develop rationality and get advanced degrees and good jobs. And perhaps people do those things in order to get the highest status mate, but people get obsessed with all the trappings and lose sight of the final goal. There is a big difference between bonobos, chimps, and humans.

Therapy should be used to fix issues, but also to improve your thinking, emotional fitness and self-awareness. I am glad they recognised that „Taekwondo is as effective as basketball moves in a real fight” . Have a default plan or two so that your ask will have a sufficient attractive level of specificity. Put yourself in the host mindset, placing others’ social comfort as top priority to shift your focus away from self-consciousness and towards warmth and openness. BUT the point of conversation is not the content. It is to signal underlying traits as well as being the process of connection.

You cannot judge me for preferring physically attractive, ambitious women. The conscious part of your brain does not get to override the part that chooses when to be horny . Lately, however, I seem to see a lot of people eager to embrace censorship for P.R. My gut feel is similar to yours – dating is similar to politics in that it’s excellent to apply rationality to it, but many people go funny in the head, and it’s a difficult topic to use in talking about rationality. Also, it can attract unwanted attention from outsiders with non-aligned motivations for the conversation.
Miller argues that the reductiveness of these ideas is what makes it appealing as it’s an excellent way to approach and understand human nature–a reframe of criticism towards this field of study. Also, I appreciate his point that sexual selection theory goes against genetic determinism. Ultimately, there is human logic and decision making with how our minds evolve through our mating choices. We aren’t just biological meat puppets trying to survive, but we’re people with rich inner lives going through the personal work, courting, and selection process to ensure the evolution and flourishing of our species. A fascinating, if highly speculative, account of human intelligence and creativity.
Do not start a club to hit on undergrads who join it. There is a power differential and you are on the wrong side of it. 1- In a month I will be a PhD student at a prestigious university in DC. This is high-status compared to the masters and bachelors students, and some junior professionals. But lower status than professors, senior PhD students and senior professionals. But mostly I am outside clear hierarchies, so my status is what I make it.
That leads us from the traits that are attractive into these, what we call proofs, social proof, material proof, aesthetic proof. These are ways of signaling that I’ve got these attractive traits in a reliable and unfakeable manner. For example, what are women’s fears, concerns and anxieties?
I know people who won’t commute to the neighboring borough for a date. In terms of galaxy brain parenting, if you never reinforce behaviors like whining, even though some things are genetically determined, you would see less of that behavior. My upbringing gave me some degree of stoicism because my father would just ignore me completely if I was whining or crying. And he was the parent who was most important to me.
Maybe humans all those 100’s of thousands of years ago preferred to mate with people who showed a special flair for these qualities just like peahens prefer to mate with peacocks with the most elaborate tails. It was a very interesting read, but I think I’d prefer a concise essay hitting the highpoints. In book form, it got a little long and overly detailed for my taste.
What dating is like from the female perspective is also laid out throughly in a way that is illuminating. It’s refreshing to see a dating book that is very scientifically motivated and is not about performing or becoming more of an asshole, but rather about becoming a better person and being honest with yourself and others. With that said, I enjoyed reading the book and did find some of the information useful; specifically the part in the back where they recommend other books and the part about dieting .
It’s pretty strong at the moment in the US, Canada, England, with pockets in Europe, Korea, Japan, and Australia. The real action is going to happen when India and/or China start taking it seriously and develop it. Suggested reading on my site, but that needs to be updated. The people I know who have taken the time to study this stuff all say it was totally worth it.
I realize that I’m female, and thus not the target audience for this book. But wow, if you follow the advice in here, you will get laid. I really want to buy this book for a couple of clueless male friends who complain often about dating, but they’d probably be insulted. Tucker Max’s first book I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, is a #1 New York Times Best Seller, spent five years on the list, and has over 2 million copies in print. His second book, Assholes Finish First, and his third book, Hilarity Ensues, are also NY Times Best Sellers. Geoffrey Miller, Ph.D., is a tenured professor of evolutionary psychology at University of New Mexico, and the author of The Mating Mind and Spent.
In a liberal city like New York, swimming with single women wishing they weren’t, one could assume Mark wouldn’t have a problem finding a mate. And while he dates and recently bootyfinder.com had a couple of short-lived relationships, Mark remains single. I am giving this book a 9/10 for writing because most people should have no problem understanding the book.
