There’s not much plot here, but readers will relish the opportunity to climb inside Autumn’s head. An intelligent, insightful, and utterly swoon-y coming-of-age story.

Speaking of tropes, Hani and Ishu gave me everything I could ever ask for from the fake dating trope, from the awkward tension to begin with, the fluttery crush feelings and all of the adorable complications it brings. I really just adored reading about Hani and Ishu’s relationship, with all of its rom com clichés (kissing in the rain, anyone?) and a deep connection and empathy for the other. While this YA contemporary touches on many important topics, the romance is also a big part of the story, yet did not feel fully fleshed out either. Because Hani believes Aisling and Dee are her best friends, she doesn’t try to understand Ishu’s side of the story with the accusation Aisling throws at her. Like, yes I understand it’s contemporary and I get that half the people that read this would be like but if you read that in a straight book it wouldn’t seem out of the ordinary. It was such a stupid plot point, I literally hated it. Her reason is better, she’s there to convince her „friends” that she’s bisexual. First off, why is this girl friends with people who would literally question her identity. That is cause for immediate droppage I’ve ever heard one, but to actually go as far as to lie, say you have a girlfriend, and continue with a ruse all in order to convince two bitches that you’re bi?

I loved how Ishu taught Hani what it was really like to have a friend who cared for her. For most of her life, Hani didn’t realise how horribly her friends were treating her, which often happens when you’ve never known any different. I think we’ve all dealt with toxic friends at some point, and it’s not until you meet a friend who actually cares about you that you’re able to see this toxic behaviour.

Although she was the more abrasive of the pair, I generally found myself enjoying Ishu’s chapters more—partly because I identified with her nerdy, studious character more than popular Hani. Jaigirdar really knows how to write a delightful combination of both serious issues and lighter content, and her books are simply so much fun to binge read. Pick this one up for the cute romance, stay for the sweet familial relationships and compelling character growth.
